Alan Chaubert
We are pleased to announce the release of Just the Three of Us, Me, the Trumpet and the Piano by Alan Chaubert.
“Here is an album that’s not only a pleasure to listen to, it is a remarkable feat of excellence by Alan Chaubert. He is joined by the talents of Jon de Flore on trap drums and Beldon Bullock on bass to complete a masterfully played production that he calls “Just the Three of Us.” ” ~ Reviewed by Dee Dee McNeil, Making A Scene
Just The Three Of Us features melodic jazz performed by Alan Chaubert who plays muted trumpet and piano. All recordings are of the artist playing both instruments simultaneously.
Joined by bass and drums, Chaubert brings out the beauty of nine superior songs ranging from Charlie Haden and Bill Evans to Thelonious Monk and Norah Jones.
Alan Chaubert, who is equally skilled as a lyrical trumpeter and a pianist, has the rare ability of being able to play both instruments simultaneously. While his trumpet is in the lead, his left-hand on the piano states chords and perfectly accompanies his melodic playing.
On Just The Three Of Us, which was recorded live with no overdubbing, Chaubert is joined by bassist Belden Bullock and drummer Jon Di Fiore with percussionist Luis Quintero guesting on two numbers. Most of the selections, with an occasional exception, are taken at relaxed tempos. Chaubert’s muted trumpet is well featured with Bullock also taking concise and inventive bass solos.
The opener is a cooking version of Thelonious Monk’s “Well You Needn’t” that includes a tradeoff with drummer Di Fiore. On Charlie Haden’s attractive “Waltz For Ruth” Chaubert’s middle-register trumpet recalls Chet Baker a bit but with his own musical personality. It is followed by his pretty playing on the Norah Jones hit “Don’t Know Why” and an atmospheric Bill Evans composition “Peace Piece.”
The catchy version of “Poinciana” has Chaubert exclusively playing piano with the rhythm section which includes the colorful percussion of Quintero. His trumpet playing is particularly heartfelt on “I Will Say Goodbye” (which is heard in two versions) and “For All We Know.” He also digs into the Thelonious Monk blues “Misterioso” and creates a quiet and often out-of-tempo trumpet exposition on “Turn Out The Stars.”
Alan Chaubert was born in Morges, Switzerland where he began on the trumpet when he was 12. He gained experience playing in a local brass band and was a professional at 17 while studying the piano. Chaubert earned a degree from the Geneva Conservatory and relocated to the United States to study at the Berklee College Of Music.
Since then he has been the accompanist and musical director of the jazz and r&b singer Yvonne Taylor (producing four of her CDs), taught at the Montreux Jazz Conservatory, moved to the US in 1997, and played with such notables as Toots Thielemans, Fred Hersch, Phil Woods, Bill Crow, Mike Richmond, Cameron Brown, and Essiet Essiet, often leading his own bands. He has performed often in New York and in Europe. Chaubert also teaches jazz improvisation and runs weekly workshops at his Shobo Music Academy. His previous album, Double A, was an impressive quintet date with guitarist Alain Pacowski.
Just The Three Of Us is Alan Chaubert’s finest recording to date, showcasing his mellow style and ability to sound relaxed and swinging while playing highly enjoyable music on both trumpet and piano.
