BLACK CEDAR –

Share List

As a rare ensemble dedicated to music for flute, cello, and guitar, Black Cedar reates, discovers, and re-imagines works for this combination for the widest range of audiences possible. With a debut album set for release this month, the trio’s recent awards include a grant from the Zellerbach Family Foundation for a free public concert of their commissions at the San Francisco Public Library in June 2016, and an invitation to premiere their 2016 commission, Mark Fish’ The Devil Inside at the National Flute Association’s 2016 Convention in August.

Black Cedar commissioned Miscellaneous Music in 2015 by Bay Area composer Durwynne Hsieh, and – with a grant from the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music – Of Emblems in 2014 by San Francisco’s Garrett Shatzer. Also in 2014, the Bay Area’s David Smith gifted Black Cedar with an adaptation of his At A Busy Intersection (2013), transforming it especially for Black Cedar’s unique sonorities. Other rarely-heard works uncovered by black Cedar include Cambodian composer Chinary Ung’s Luminous Spirals (1997), American composer Nathan Kolosko’s Hungarian Trio (2012), and New Zealand composer Ross Carey’s Te Whanganui-a-Tara (1994).
